Coding Essentials for Laboratory FY20Q1 Update

We are currently completing the final touches to your resource and rest assured all our energy is invested in guaranteeing that we offer the most current and complete solutions to your everyday – and maybe not so everyday – coding, charge capture, and compliance questions. When updating the 2020 edition of the Coding Essentials for Laboratories, our team is paying extra attention to:

Code changes. With several key code changes instore, we have provided crosswalk and gapfill tables that breakdown the details. In addition, definition reminders are given along with actionable guidance on how to apply them. This includes new codes for chemistry testing, microbiology, and molecular pathology.

NCCI updates. National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) updates are now in effect. We examine the changes and revisions regarding the stacking/unbundling of panels and understanding simultaneous vs. sequential and units for 81479.

Proprietary Laboratory Analyses (PLA) code coverage: With PLA codes continuing to grow in numbers, confusing scenarios may result. One such problem area centers around those certain microbiology tests and other services which also have a Category 1 CPT code. This scenario sets laboratories up for the high risk of confusion, miscoding, and claims denials. With concrete examples, your resource will give more clarity to this area.
