Radiology Question for the Week of October 24, 2016

Question:

If a transplanted kidney, both native kidneys, and the bladder are imaged with ultrasound, do we code 76770 plus 76776 or just 76776?

Answer:

According to the NCCI Policy Manual for Medicare Services, chapter 9, you would report 76770 when a transplanted kidney and other retroperitoneal structures are imaged. If a duplex scan is also performed, report 93975 or 93976.

76770 Ultrasound, retroperitoneal (e.g., renal, aorta, nodes), real time with image documentation; complete
93975 Duplex scan of arterial inflow and venous outflow of abdominal, pelvic, scrotal contents and/or retroperitoneal organs; complete study
93976 Duplex scan of arterial inflow and venous outflow of abdominal, pelvic, scrotal contents and/or retroperitoneal organs; limited study
