Radiology Question for the Week of October 10, 2016

What CPT code is recommended for direct injection of sclerosing solution into vulvar varicosities? Code 36468 doesn’t seem correct since it is not spider veins and neither do 36470 or 36471 since the vulvar area is part of the trunk of the body. The patients treated all have pelvic congestion, some have been previously treated with embolization, some not. All are symptomatic.

This would be reported with the following embolization code, which includes direct injection vascular sclerosing of varicosities not in the lower extremities:

37241 Vascular embolization or occlusion, inclusive of all radiological supervision and interpretation, intraprocedural roadmapping, and imaging guidance necessary to complete the intervention; venous, other than hemorrhage (e.g., congenital or acquired venous malformations, venous and capillary hemangiomas, varices, varicoceles)
