Radiology Question for the Week of November 28, 2016

Question:

How do I code for an MRI of the brain and MRI of the IACs?

Answer:

When brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is performed followed by only a few extra sequences focused on the internal auditory canals (IACs), the MRI of the IACs is included with the brain MRI. However, when a complete MRI of the brain study is performed in conjunction with a complete study of the IACs, it is appropriate to assign the appropriate brain MRI code twice and append the -59 modifier to second code.
