Radiology Question for the Week of November 21, 2016

Question:

If a doctor orders bilateral oblique chest views only, should the following code be assigned twice?
71035          Radiologic examination, chest, special views (e.g., lateral decubitus, Bucky studies)

Answer:

For years, the American College of Radiology (ACR) has recommended that 71035 would be coded once per view, so if bilateral obliques were done, you would code 71035 x 2. However, more recently it has said not to bill it x 2. In November 2015, the American Medical Association indicated (via private correspondence) that code 71035 would be assigned once.
