Radiology Question for the Week of December 28, 2015

Question:

How do I code for an MRI of the brain and MRI of the IACs?

Answer:

The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the internal auditory canals (IACs) is included with the brain MRI when the imaging is performed followed by only a few extra sequences. However, when a complete MRI of the brain study is performed in conjunction with a complete study of the IACs, it is appropriate to assign a brain MRI code twice and append the -59 modifier to second code.
