Radiology Question for the Week of August 15, 2016

Question:

Can we bill a whole body bone scan and SPECT imaging on the same account? The patient has cancer, and the whole body bone scan would be for metastatic disease and the SPECT imaging for spine disease.

Answer:

You may bill the following codes together:

78306 Bone and/or joint imaging; whole body
78320 Bone and/or joint imaging; tomographic (SPECT)

These are the only two codes in that section (78300–78320) that may be billed together. If a limited or multiple area bone scan, or a three-phase bone scan are performed and SPECT is also performed, then only SPECT would be coded.
