Laboratory Question for the Week of September 14, 2020

Laboratory Compliance Question of the Week

I’ve heard the government wants submission of COVID-19 lab data via electronic health records, do you have any tips for reporting this?

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has some recommendations on how this lab data can be captured in EHR. These are suggestions but not requirements in terms of transmitting lab results back to the ordering provider. Specifics for inclusion are:

  • Test result – use appropriate LOINC and SNOMED codes, as defined by the Laboratory In Vitro Diagnostics (LIVD) Test Code Mapping for SARS-CoV-2 Tests provided by CDC
  • Test result date (date format)
  • Unique patient identifier
  • Test ordered—use appropriate LOINC codes
  • Device Identifier
  • Accession #/Specimen ID

This question was answered in an edition of our Laboratory Compliance Manager. For more hot topics relating to laboratory services, please visit our store or call us at 1.800.252.1578, ext. 2.
