Laboratory Compliance Question of the Week

Question:

Are there specific types of specimen samples covered by code 88108—cytopathology, concentration technique, smears and interpretation (e.g., Saccomanno technique)?

Answer:

Cytopathology, concentration technique (88108) (such as Saccomanno, cytocentrifugation, and cytospins) may involve many different types of specimen samples. For example, bronchial, cervicovaginal, and conjunctival brushings; nipple discharge; sputum; and gastrointestinal epithelial cell specimens may require concentration before a smear can be prepared. Concentration techniques are often combined with smears and filter preparations to identify malignant cells.
