Laboratory Compliance Question of the Week

Question:

If a test kit contains a card with five different spots each testing for a different species of an infectious agent, how many units of service (UOS) can be reported for Medicare claims?

Answer:

Only one UOS for that test procedure may be reported. However, if a physician tests for three different species of that infectious agent by using three different test kits each containing a card testing for one species, the physician may report three UOS of the appropriate CPT® code.
