Are screening tests for Medicare beneficiaries with diabetes covered?


Diabetes screening tests are covered for individuals “at risk for diabetes,” which means individuals with any of the following risk factors:

• Hypertension
• Dyslipidemia
• Obesity, defined as a body mass index (BMI) greater than or equal to 30 kg/m2
• Previous identification of an elevated impaired fasting glucose
• Previous identification of impaired glucose tolerance
• A risk factor consisting of at least two of the following characteristics:

• Overweight (defined as a BMI of more than 25 kg/m2, but less than 30)
• A family history of diabetes, which the treating provider must base on the patient’s medical history and best practice standards
• A history of gestational diabetes mellitus or delivery of a baby weighing greater than nine pounds
• 65 years of age or older.
