General Compliance Question of the Week

Is the use of virtual credit cards for health care claim payments covered by HIPAA transactions requirements?

No. The Department of Health & Human Services adopted electronic funds transfer (EFT) standards that apply only to healthcare claim payments made via EFT through the Automated Clearinghouse (ACH) Network—the processing and delivery system for many EFT. Virtual credit card payments are made outside of the ACH Network and therefore are not covered by the HIPAA EFT standards.
