General Compliance Question of the Week

Question:

In the past, we were able to report a whole-body planar scan (78802) with a SPECT scan (78803). However, there is now an edit prohibiting that. Do you know why?

Answer:

No, the reason is not known. The guideline for years was that whole-body planar imaging may be billed with SPECT when both are performed. The new edits as of January 1, 2020, prohibit billing those codes together. We do know that some errors were made in the 2020 edits, so keep watch on the CMS website for updates and deletions.
