Cardiology Compliance Question of the Week

Question:

Can a removal loop recorder (33284) and an implant loop recorder (33282) be charged on the same day?

Answer:

Since implantable loop recorders are intended for long-term evaluation, it would be unusual to place and remove the recorder on the same day. In the case of Medicare claims, there is a national correct coding initiative (CCI) edit bundling codes 33284 and 33282. The edit can be bypassed with a modifier if appropriate, such as if performed at a separate encounter or if an existing loop recorder is removed for some reason and a new one implanted.
