Cardiology Compliance Question of the Week

Question:

I am billing for the hospital outpatient department. How do I bill for the technical component only of a transesophageal echocardiogram? Code 93312 includes probe placement and interpretation and report in addition to image acquisition.

Answer:

You would assign the following code. Technically you would report it with modifier -TC, but since you will be billing on a UB (or electronic equivalent), the technical component is assumed.

93312 Echocardiography, transesophageal, real-time with image documentation (2D) (with or without M-mode recording); including probe placement, image acquisition, interpretation and report
