Cardiology Compliance Question of the Week

Question:

One of our patients recently had coronary stents placed. Today he presented with an ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), and the doctor performed an angioplasty only in one of the stents. May we still report code 92941 even though there was only one type of intervention?

Answer:

If the angioplasty was done in the culprit vessel during the acute phase of an MI, then 92941 should be assigned. Although the code description says “combination of angioplasty, stent or atherectomy,” it is not necessary to use two or more types of treatment. In a January 2014 issue of CPT Assistant, the American Medical Association (AMA) clarified that 92941 can be assigned if one or more therapies were used.
