Cardiology Question for the Week of March 7, 2016

Cardiology Compliance Question of the Week

Question:

I am looking for a resource related to what conditions and diagnoses Medicare covers related to pacemakers.

Answer:

The Medicare national coverage determination (NCD) for single-chamber and dual-chamber permanent cardiac pacemakers took effect on August 13, 2013. At the moment, and until mid-July of this year, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will be revising the formal claims processing instructions for this NCD. It instructed Medicare administrative contractors

(MACs) to implement this NCD at the local level until it can complete this project.

The following provider-information memo provides links to transmittals and Medicare manuals that offer details on the NCD: https://www.cms.gov/Outreach-and-Education/Medicare-Learning-Network-MLN/MLNMattersArticles/downloads/MM9078.pdf.
