Cardiology Compliance Question of the Week

While looking at my 2019 CPT® manual I noticed code 93024, which is reported for an ergonovine provocation test. I am not familiar with this procedure. What is it used for?

Ergonovine is a drug that is administered intravenously to evaluate for coronary artery spasm. The patient most likely experienced a previous coronary angiography. While this infusion was performed, an additional angiography and further testing was administered. CPT® code 93024 is not defined as an add-on code, so while another procedure isn’t necessary at the same session, it is not uncommon to also have a code from the diagnostic cardiac catheterization series of CPT reported as well.
