Laboratory Compliance Question of the Week

Question:

How does new research contradict the GAO’s assertions on lab billing?

Answer:

The Braid-Forbes analysis demonstrated that in order for the GAO’s claims to be accurate, the volume of Medicare billed panel tests would decrease while the volume of individual component tests should have risen greatly. However, the research revealed that the comprehensive metabolic panel and individual component test volume decreased. The analysis offered a comparison of the first two quarters for both 2017 (before the Protecting Access to Medicare Act of 2014 [PAMA]) as well as 2018 (after PAMA), which indicated that the comprehensive metabolic panel’s Medicare volume dropped by two percent with the individual component test falling in volume by an average of five percent.
