Question:

Does using a vacuum-assisted breast biopsy device vs a standard core biopsy affect which CPT® code we use? No matter how the tissue is removed, we use the following code:

19083 Biopsy, breast, with placement of breast localization device(s) (e.g., clip, metallic pellet), when performed, and imaging of the biopsy specimen, when performed, percutaneous; first lesion, including ultrasound guidance

Answer:

Answer:

You are correct. CPT® truly only differentiates for percutaneous image-guided breast biopsy based upon the modality used and whether an initial lesion or subsequent (separate) lesion was studied. Code 19083 would be reported for an ultrasound-guided percutaneous breast biopsy whether a vacuum-assisted device or standard core biopsy device is used.
