Nuclear Medicine Question for the Week of November 7, 2016

Question:

Question:

Can I bill 78072 twice on the same date, but at different times? The first study was performed at 2:18 p.m., and the second study was done at 3:12 p.m.

Answer:

Answer:

No, it would be normal to do two sets of imaging for 78072, but the code is reported only once.

In CPT® Changes 2013, the procedure description for 78072 states that the complete study consists of a minimum of two separate sets of planar imaging with one set acquired at 10 to 30 minutes post injection of the radiopharmaceutical, and the second set at 90 to 240 minutes post injection. A limited computed tomography (CT) study of the neck and mediastinum is acquired, and without moving the patient, a SPECT study of the same regions is acquired.
