Question

I know that the AMA has published additional information on what it considers a myocardial infarction (MI) for code 92941, but how many times you can assign it? We did three vessels during an MI, but there is a medically unlikely edit (MUE) of 1.

Answer

In general, code 92941 should be coded only once for one vessel. This code is used for treatment of the culprit lesion, which is the thrombus actually causing the heart attack. Other vessels may be treated at the same session, but usually only one is actually the target/culprit.

Additional vessels would be assigned non-MI intervention codes as appropriate.
