Question

I have a report where the technique says radiopharmaceutical localization of tumor of whole body two or more days imaging, but the body of the report says that imaging at two hours and 24 hours following radiopharmaceutical was done. Would this be assigned to code 78802 or 78804?

Answer

The “day” in the code descriptions means calendar day, not 24 hours, so you would report 78804. If the radiopharmaceutical was given at 8 a.m. on Monday with initial imaging at 10 a.m., the last imaging (at 24 hours) would be the next day, Tuesday at 8 a.m., which would be imaging over two days.

78802 Radiopharmaceutical localization of tumor or distribution of radiopharmaceutical agent(s); whole body, single day imaging

78804 Radiopharmaceutical localization of tumor or distribution of radiopharmaceutical agent(s); whole body, requiring 2 or more days imaging
