Question

Our doctor had to remove a dual-chamber pacemaker along with the wires from the left side due to an eroded/infected pacemaker site. He put a whole new dual-chamber pacemaker on the right side (33208).  Can I bill and get paid for both procedures?

Answer

Yes, you would code individually for the removal with codes 33233 and 33235, and the new placement with 33208.

33233Removal of permanent pacemaker pulse generator only

33235 Removal of transvenous pacemaker electrode(s); dual lead system

33208 Insertion of new or replacement of permanent pacemaker with transvenous electrode(s); atrial and ventricular

The professional edition of the CPT book has a chart at the beginning of the Pacemaker section that is very helpful in choosing codes.
