Radiology Question for the Week of February 8, 2016

Question:

We have a patient with a history of right breast mastectomy.  She arrives today with an order from her physician that states, “Left breast screening mammogram. Status post right mastectomy.” Is it appropriate to charge G0202 (bilateral digital screening) even though we are not imaging the right side, or should we charge G0206 for unilateral even though the physician wants a screening exam and not a diagnostic?

Answer

You would assign code G0202-52. The -52 modifier indicates that it is a unilateral screening and not a bilateral.

G0202Screening mammography, producing direct digital image, bilateral, all views
