Cardiology Question for the Week of February 15, 2016

Question:

Can I assign a separate code when intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) is used during a coronary intervention?

Answer

Yes, the descriptions for coronary IVUS codes 92978 and 92979 indicate that they may be assigned during diagnostic evaluation and/or therapeutic intervention.  These codes are packaged under the hospital OPPS for outpatient hospital billing but should be coded when IVUS is used. The professional component of IVUS is separately paid.

92979Intravascular ultrasound (coronary vessel or graft) during diagnostic evaluation and/or therapeutic intervention including imaging supervision, interpretation and report; each additional vessel (List separately in addition to code for primary procedure)
