Nuclear Medicine Question for the Week of August 1, 2016

Question:

Question:

We are installing a new SPECT/CT scanner next month. I only find the following CPT code for a procedure performed with this equipment:

78072   Parathyroid planar imaging (including subtraction, when performed); with tomographic (SPECT), and concurrently acquired computed tomography (CT) for anatomical localization.

Should I use the unlisted nuclear medicine CPT code if we do any other SPECT/CT scans?

Answer:

Answer:

Unless the payer has posted otherwise, you would use the appropriate SPECT code plus an unlisted nuclear medicine code for the CT for anatomic localization. However, you should be aware that many payers consider SPECT/CT to be investigational and not a billable service.
